Collect for Grace:
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us safely to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect for Purity:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we might perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Read: Psalm 54, 2 Kings 17:5-18, and Matthew 23:29-39
Jesus, filled with anger at the haughtiness and hypocrisy of the religious authorities, is preaching a very difficult sermon. One can imagine how hard it must have been for them to listen to it. But Jesus’ anger at their sinfulness was a direct result of his great love for them. He deeply wanted them to see the light, to follow him. Yet they were blind because of their selfishness and hypocrisy.
Jesus loves you enough that he gave his life for you. Shouldn’t you give your life to him? You may find the following prayer helpful:
Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.
