Morning Prayer Guide - Tuesday
Begin by praying the Collect for Grace and Collect for Purity.
Collect for Grace:
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us safely to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect for Purity:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we might perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Read: Psalm 119:169-176, 1 Kings 13:11-25, and Colossians 3:1-11
St. Paul writes that we must set our minds on Christ and his things, and not on ourselves and our things.
Sometimes we have to put our own wants to death. We often have a certain way in mind that we want things to go. We often have a list of things we want to do or get. We often fall into the trap of thinking that life is all about us. We then transfer that thinking to other things, like church. There’s just one small problem with this line of thinking.
It’s not about you.
It’s about what God can do in you and through you.
God wants you to put yourself aside and choose him. This is expressed in several different ways throughout the Bible, but Jesus puts it best: “Whoever desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mk. 8:34)
What do you need to deny? Put it aside. Follow Jesus. Write your own prayer.
