Begin by praying the Collect for Grace and Collect for Purity.
Collect for Grace:
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us safely to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect for Purity:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we might perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Read: Psalm 8, Genesis 21:22-34, and Romans 8:1-11
Our New Testament passage is about the conflict between the flesh and God’s Spirit. St. Paul writes that the flesh is “at enmity” with God. It boils down to the fact that God wants us to do things his way, and we want to do things our own way, because we’re selfish.
God wants us to follow him. We have to declare war on the self, and put aside what we want in order to follow God. God has many good things for us, and giving up self will ultimately result in more good than we can imagine. But it is difficult, because we are broken by sin.
Take some time to pray about this. Ask God to help choose him and life over self and death. Write your own prayer.
