Begin by praying the Collect for Grace and Collect for Purity.
Collect for Grace:
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us safely to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect for Purity:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we might perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Read: Psalm 8, Genesis 20:1-18, and Galatians 3:23-29
St. Paul writes that in Christ the divisions we put between ourselves – Jew or Gentile, male or female, slave or free – are no more. We are one in Christ.
Jesus calls many people, from many backgrounds and with many skills. He doesn’t look at outward things like we do. “You can’t do that job, you’re a woman.” “You’re too Catholic.” “You’re from the wrong side of the tracks and you have too many piercings.” We sure know how to put people down and go against Jesus’ call, don’t we?
Pray about how you can affirm a person’s calling today, especially someone who might be, by human standards, the wrong person for the job. If there is anyone with whom you have trouble, ask God to help you change your heart. Write your own prayer.
