Begin by praying the Collect for Grace and Collect for Purity.
Collect for Grace:
Lord God, almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us safely to this new day: Preserve us with your mighty power, that we may not fall into sin, nor be overcome by adversity; and in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Collect for Purity:
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we might perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Read: Psalm 90:12-17, Deuteronomy 5:1-21, and Hebrews 3:7-19
God is serious about obedience. While he will not force us, like puppets on strings, to do what he wants, he does want us to willingly and faithfully follow him. He wants us to learn from him and do the things he tells us to do. If we don’t, there are often consequences.
The Israelites spent forty years circling the same mountain in the desert because they allowed their fear to stop their obedience. God would have helped them just as much then as he did later. He already had the Canaanites shaking in fear of the Israelites, and had they been obedient they could have taken the land and settled down. They essentially wasted a whole generation.
What has God told you to do? Does fear prevent you from doing it? What mountains have you had to circle in the desert? Ask God to help you overcome your fear and respond with obedience. Write your own prayer.
